In 1989 Karen’s children, Rachel and
Sarah, were in 2nd grade and nursery school and she wanted to be
available for them so she started a home based gift basket business. Karen grew
the business in part because of fabulous customer service and unique products in
her baskets. Karen found a wonderful product at a trade show that makes
impressions of baby’s hand and foot in plaster of paris. While the products were
cute, the company’s ability to deliver products in a timely manner was not so
cute. Friends encouraged Karen to design her own kits. Those same friends also
suggested that Karen sell the kits to other gift basket business to help recoup
some of the money in designing and creating the kits. As they say the rest is
history.
Karen started Karen’s Keepsakes in
1999 with 5 products - baby handprint and footprint kits, containers for the
lock of hair from the first haircut and first lost tooth, as well as a video
case to hold a video of the memories of baby’s first year. A container for the
hospital bracelet followed as well as creating the products in Spanish.
Eventually My Paw Print and Santa Paws for dog and cat paw
impressions were added.
Over time Karen added additional
products that would appeal to people creating gift baskets as well as other
businesses among them maternity shops, hospitals, card stores, spas, kids hair
salons, and embroidery shops.
